Heritage & Chattels Sub-committee


1. Heritage is seen to include history, and is the current term in use to cover historical records, historical sites, artefacts, traditions and cultures. As such heritage encompass a wider remit than the term history. English Heritage use the following definition: “Heritage is a broad concept and includes the natural as well as the cultural environment. It encompasses landscapes, historic places, sites and built environments, as well as bio-diversity, collections, past and continuing cultural practices, knowledge and living experiences. It records and expresses the long processes of historic development, forming the essence of diverse national, regional, indigenous and local identities and is an integral part of modern life. It is a dynamic reference point and positive instrument for growth and change. The particular heritage and collective memory of each locality or community is irreplaceable and an important foundation for development, both now and into the future”.

2. There is a need to ensure that the heritage of the Corps (and its antecedents) is both preserved and set in the context of military nursing. This requires an approach which recognises the synergies and dependencies on our partner Corps in the AMS, whilst recognising that our Corps heritage is unique. It also recognises the need for partnerships with nursing and military historians and others, outside of the Corps, who can help place our heritage within nursing and military contexts.


3. The purpose of the QARANC Association Heritage & Chattels Committee is to create a stronger understanding of Corps heritage in order to be the authoritative focus for others interested in our history, and to provide a clear understanding of the nature of military nursing that will help shape future force planning.


4. Membership of the QARANC Heritage & Chattels Committee:

(a) Chair (Appointed by the Board of Trustees. Not necessarily a trustee bur should be a subject matter expert)

(b) Chair of the QARANC Association

(c) QARANC Regimental Secretary

(d) Two Trustees (Appointed by the Board of Trustees, only one if the Chair is a trustee)

(e) Two members of the Association who are Military Nursing Subject Matter Experts

(f) Director of the Museum of Military Medicine (ex officio)

(g) PhD Scholar (ex officio)

(h) Other members to be co-opted by the Committee when required.

Accountability and Responsibility

5. The QARANC Association Heritage & Chattels Committee will be constituted under paragraphs 25-26 of the Association Constitution, and will be accountable to the Association Board of Trustees.


6. QARANC Chattels:

(a) Maintaining an accessible register of Chattels.

(b) Ensuring that all custodians of QARANC Association Chattels have a copy of Chattels Standing Orders relating to the property in their care.

(c) Accounting for the Chattels to the Board of Trustees by means of an annual Chattels Audit. This should be undertaken by the end of the financial year.

(d) Permitting the loan of any item to any regular or reserve unit whose membership includes QARANC personnel.

(e) Selling at best price any Chattels not required for use or loan. Proceeds of such sales are to be credited to the QARANC Association Central Fund and details reported annually to the Board of Trustees.

(f) Conversion of the Chattels into a managed Heritage Collection.

7. Heritage information:

(a) The creation and maintenance of a single publicly accessible record of publicly owned memorials and artworks pertaining to Army nurses and Army nursing.

(b) The creation and maintenance of a single publicly accessible record of public archives related to Army nurses and Army nursing, both in the UK and overseas.

(c) Engagement in and encouraging research related to Corps heritage.

(d) Making links to other relevant heritage or history groups and individuals, who can assist us with Corps heritage projects, or who might wish to use Corps heritage information.

(e) Having a presence at conferences related to these Terms of Reference (for example, a conference stand, advertising material, presentations or posters).

(f) Endorsing articles written under the auspices of this committee, and ensuring they are made available to the Museum of Military Medicine.

(g) Supporting Association members who want to write and publish about Corps heritage.

(h) Responding to family history and nursing history enquiries relating to Army nurses.

8. Education:

(a) Creating materials that can be used by the AMS Recruiting Group, Army Recruiting and Training Directorate (ARTD), Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS), the Defence Academy or other similar organisations responsible for the future Corps workforce.

(b) Endorsing programmes of education related to military nursing history and heritage.

(c) Supporting student researchers (for example, access to Corps information, access by proxy for international students, membership of supervisory teams).

(d) Supporting individuals and units who are planning battlefield tours/ staff rides with a military nursing component.

(e) Maintaining a heritage website.

(f) Supporting the Museum of Military Medicine with presentation programmes at the Museum, and outreach programmes.

9. Publication:

(a) Project planning, and managing the publication of, a series of publications chronicling army nursing.

(b) Publishing a “Corps Heritage Matters” column in each Gazette.

(c) Seeking other opportunities to publish on heritage matters, and to endorse publications by other individuals or organisations that are supportive of Corps heritage.

10. Engagement:

(a) Broadening the involvement of Association members in heritage projects by creating and managing a QARANC History Society.

(b) Having membership from within the Committee of appropriate UK and international nursing and military history and heritage groups.

(c) Having membership from within the Committee of online forums associated with Army nurses and Army nursing.

Administrative and Financial Support

11. Administrative support will come from the Regimental Headquarters.

12. The Committee will have a budget allocation to cover expenditure in line with other such Committees, with all expenditure being agreed through the Board of Trustees.


13. The Heritage & Chattels sub-Committee will meet four times a year at a time that allows for a report to be made to the following Board of Trustees meeting.

14. Boards of Officers, or meetings to assist with maintenance of heritage items will be arranged as required.


15. The General Secretary will receive the minutes of Committee meetings. The Board of Trustees will receive a report from the Committee at each Board Meeting
